Magnolia Leaves in Beautiful Decline

While we were on vacation in Williamsburg earlier this month, I picked up three magnolia leaves off the ground. They are lovely in any season, but especially in autumn. I took the leaves back to our condo and arranged them on white paper in a very sunny window and took several pictures with my iPhone. I was amazed at the quality of the pictures. The pictures turned out so well that I didn't really need to paint them, but you know I painted them! What else are leisurely Sunday afternoons for?

First is the picture from my phone, followed by the painting in three stages. Last is the painting scanned and color-corrected. This painting is on the first page of the 3.5"x5.5" Moleskine watercolor journal that my sweet daughter bought for my birthday in August.

  1. Wow! This is absolutely gorgeous! One of my favorite things to sketch, fall leaves.

    1. I enjoy them, too. In a way, they almost paint themselves. Watercolor is the perfect medium for fall leaves. I hope to paint more leaves soon. Thanks again, for your comments
